Free-form crop vs. fixed ratios

Dragging a free-form selection gives you exact pixel control but no consistency across multiple images; snapping to a fixed ratio (1:1, 16:9, 4:3) guarantees every cropped image comes out the same shape, which matters for anything going into a grid, a carousel, or a set of thumbnails where mismatched aspect ratios look visibly inconsistent.

Common target ratios and where they're used

1:1 (square) is the standard for most social profile avatars and product thumbnails; 16:9 matches video thumbnails and most modern displays; 4:3 is the older standard still used for some print and presentation formats. Picking the ratio that matches where the image is actually going, before cropping, avoids a second re-crop later.

Why would I use a fixed ratio instead of just dragging a free-form crop?

Consistency — a fixed ratio guarantees every image you crop comes out the exact same shape, which matters the moment images go into a grid, gallery, or thumbnail set where mismatched aspect ratios look visibly uneven. Free-form crop is fine for a single one-off image.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No — crop only removes pixels outside the selection, it doesn't re-compress or resample the pixels you keep. The remaining image retains its original quality (resizing afterward is a separate operation with its own quality considerations).

What resolution will my cropped image be?

Exactly the pixel dimensions of your selection box, at the original image's resolution — cropping doesn't change pixel density, only which pixels are kept. If you need a specific output resolution, resize after cropping.
