What a watermark actually protects against — and what it doesn't
A visible watermark is a deterrent and an attribution/status marker (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, a company name) — it does not prevent someone from removing it with basic image or PDF editing skills, since it's simply drawn onto the page, not cryptographically bound to the content. Treat it as a visual signal, not a security or DRM mechanism; if you need to actually prevent redistribution, a watermark alone is the wrong tool for that job.
Text vs. image watermarks
Text watermarks are simple and always readable but limited to standard fonts, which only support Latin/Western-European characters — non-Latin scripts (Cyrillic, CJK, Arabic) will fail or render incorrectly. An image watermark (a logo, for example) sidesteps the font limitation entirely, at the cost of needing a prepared image file first.
Does a watermark actually prevent someone from using my PDF without permission?
No — it's a visible deterrent and attribution marker, not a security or DRM mechanism. Someone with basic editing tools can remove or crop out a watermark; if you need to genuinely prevent unauthorized use, a watermark alone doesn't achieve that.
Why does my watermark text look wrong or not appear at all?
Standard PDF fonts used for text watermarks are WinAnsi-only, supporting Latin/Western-European characters — non-Latin text (Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic, etc.) isn't supported and will fail or render as garbled characters. Use an image watermark instead if you need non-Latin script.
Can I control how transparent the watermark is?
Yes — opacity is adjustable so the watermark is visible without fully obscuring the underlying content. Lower opacity is generally preferred for a watermark that shouldn't interfere with reading the actual document.
